Map of Marine Mammal Sightings in the Monterey Bay Region compiled by Richard Ternullo 
There were forty-one sightings of blue whales scattered throughout the Bay and outer waters, with group sizes ranging up to 22. There were forty-two humpback whale sightings of up to 25 individuals scattered along canyon edges and throughout the Bay. Killer Whales sighted during August represent the first sighting of "offshore-type" Killer Whales in summer in California. Previously they have been seen only in fall and winter. They appear to be fish-eaters. Bottlenose dolphins are rarely seen from boat-based platforms because of their inshore habits and are best observed from shore with the following sites considered the best: north of Wharf #2 in Monterey, Del Monte Beach, Marina State Beach, and Sunset State Beach north to the Cement Ship. About 1200 California sea lions are hauled out on the Monterey Breakwater. Harbor seals and sea otters are seen from Monterey Harbor along rocky coasts to Pt. Lobos and in Elkhorn Slough.
